Morning Work, 2020

My piece consists of a small number of objects based back to my childhood, growing up in Newark, New Jersey. All of these objects have a personal attachment to me, from the medal from the currently shut-down elementary school that I went to, to the green coffee cup that I used to take with me on the late-night drives to my mother’s night job. The marble bracelets that I wore nearly every day during middle school, and the cheerleading bag that my sister used to carry her uniform. I have often seen my past in a negative and lonely light, as I barely had serious and meaningful friends back then. But a look back into the positive aspects of my history reminds me that things weren’t always so bad and dull. Now, I’ve grown a quiet fondness for that time in my life, as it has shaped me into the complex person that I am today.
