Do You Recall?, Gouache on paper, October 7th, 2020, 8 in. x 11 in.

Do You Recall? is an exploration into the past that speaks on the alteration of memory over time and family dynamic within a racially blended context. The altering of personal memories is not always conscious, it may be to the extent of entirely blocking out painful memories as a safeguard for our emotions or it can be as small as forgetting the details of a loved one’s face after not having seen them in a long time. It is important that we reconcile with these forgotten moments of our past as they influence and shape our experience and behaviors in this emerging present. In this current moment of cultural awareness as we witness continued violence and subjugation as a result of white supremacy it is hard not to feel the strain and separation even within a home. Where do our loyalties lie? Where will our actions take us? Where do we go from here?
